CAT5e Cable – Not all the Same
Not all CAT5e is the same. There are a couple of key points you need to watch out for.
You need to ensure the cable you use is pure copper CAT5e cable, not CCA (Copper Coated Aluminum). CCA is a product developed by the Chinese to be lighter weight and cheaper to manufacture than pure copper cable. It is often passed off as pure copper. Be careful – at best, CCA will just have a detrimental affect on your video quality. Worst case, it won’t work.
This is different to the solid core vs stranded core. We do recommend solid core.
Outdoor Grade Cable
Over time cable degrades if outside and in view of sunlight. The UV rays are damaging to the outer jacket of the cable. It is important to ensure the cable you use is UV rated. The outer jacket of the cable doesn’t break down in the UV light extending the life of the cable.
If you are going to bury the cable, we would always recommend using a conduit for protection. If you are going to bury direct in the ground then it’s important to ensure cable rated for direct burial is used.
Plenum space is the parts of a building that allows air circulation for heating/cooling systems. If you are going to run cables in these areas you need to ensure the cable is rated for use in plenum areas. Often referred to as ‘plenum cable’.
The standard cable we supply is NOT plenum rated however it is available for special order. Please contact us to order.
Cable from Orange Security
CAT5e or CAT6?
The way the video baluns work is different from data networks, therefore CAT5e and CAT6 work exactly the same for security cameras. We supply CAT5e cable as it is more cost effective – CAT6 is not worth the premium for security cameras.
