Why are Surveillance Cameras Used?
Security cameras have many different uses. In this article we explore some of the obvious uses as well as some of the less obvious, but still very valid uses for security camera systems.
Some of the more obvious uses for security camera systems are:
- Securing your home
- Securing your place of work
Some of the less obvious uses for surveillance cameras are:
- Neighborhood watch
- Staff training
- Observing your pets
- Vehicle tracking
- Caring for the elderly or disabled
- Safety in the work place
More Obvious Uses for Security Camera Systems
Securing your Home
The most obvious use for surveillance camera systems are for home security.
Of course, when you are there you can protect your home and your family. The problem comes when you are not. That is where CCTV systems really step up to the plate. The ability to remotely access your surveillance system at home allows you to not only review what happened after an event, but also check the home to make sure everything is ok. - Medium Home System (approx 2,500 sqft)
- Large Home System (approx 7,000 sqft)
Securing your Place of Work
The other obvious use for security camera technology is in securing your place of work. This includes but is of course not limited to the following environments. Offices, retail stores, gas stations, warehouses or, frankly, anywhere else.
Abusive customers are one of the biggest reasons we hear for business owners wanting to install security cameras. They want to protect their staff from these customers – everyone has the right to work in safety and surveillance systems help this.
Stock shrinkage (also known as theft) is another common reason we hear for installing CCTV cameras at a place of work. Unfortunately, not all people (staff or otherwise) are honest. Stock does goes missing. A correctly specified and installed security camera system will aid in identifying whoever stole from the business. Less Obvious Uses for Security Camera Systems
It’s impressive what a security camera on a single home can do. It’s amazing what a network of security camera systems can do for a neighborhood watch program!
I have personally worked closely with a number of neighborhood security schemes. They install security camera systems at strategic locations throughout the neighborhood to monitor common entrances/exits to the neighborhood.
The network works best when you have a number of home owners that require security camera systems and can contribute one or two cameras to the community for the “greater good” of the neighborhood.
If your neighborhood watch scheme want to discuss a network of camera systems, get in touch!
Staff are not often keen to have security cameras in their workplace. One real advantage that can be explained to the members of staff is that the security camera system will be used for staff training.
I remember selling a security camera system to an independent car dealership. We spent some time discussing the merits of installing a camera inside the dealership. The idea was that this camera would give a general idea of what was going on. There were 2 members of sales staff who had been complained about. The complaint was that they had ignored customers when they came into the dealership. Of course, the sales staff were certain they hadn’t done this.
To cut a long story short, the owner of the business could review the footage with the sales staff. This showed them that while they weren’t doing it on purpose, when they were involved in a particular task, they just didn’t see the customer. The self awareness this gave the staff solved the problem.
Could you make use of a surveillance camera system for staff training in your business?
Observing your pets
Those of us who have ‘fur babies’ love them very much. While it would be great if our lovable bundles of joy could accompany us everywhere, this just isn’t the practical reality. Security cameras can allow you to keep a watchful eye over your pets when you are not home.
The comfort this additional reassurance provides is invaluable for those of us who worry. Certainly with our pets at my home, we want to check up on them when out for a particularly long time. We don’t do this often. But when we do, the security camera system is worth it’s weight in gold.
Caring for the elderly or disabled
A common theme amongst those customers of ours who are carers is the requirement for independence from those they care for.
As our loved ones get older, it is common that they defiantly refuse to go into a care home or seek professional support. Understandably, they wish to stay in their own homes surrounded by their own possessions. Without someone else “intruding”. They may need the assistance, but they don’t agree. A few well positioned security cameras will give this peace of mind.
We also have customers who care for disabled family members who with to increase their independence. The carers are often concerned and use security camera systems to keep an eye on things without having to physically be present.
These cameras allow the elderly or disabled loved one to retain their independence and their dignity. It also gives the carers peace of mind. You can’t put a price on that!
Safety in the work place
Earlier in this article I touched on some security of the work place. The other area where security cameras can be very useful is staff safety from work place risks.
Such as ensuring contractors are wearing hard hats when there is the risk of falling debris. Making sure people are not using equipment in a way they should not be. Ensuring people are not in dangerous locations (very popular use in manufacturing). The list really is endless.
Take a look at our sample warehouse loading bay camera system where some of the risks around a loading bay can be monitored. Sample Warehouse Security Camera System.
As you can see from the above, there are many uses for security camera systems beyond the obvious of securing physical locations. We also don’t cover all possible uses here – if you have used security cameras in an unusual way, we’d love to hear about it and perhaps feature you on our blog. Alternatively, we would love to help you out with your unusual or different security camera system requirement. Get in touch here.
